ABOUT

DESIGNTAB is an annual publication produced by a student or few from @bcu_graphics which entails a curated assembly of the finest dissertations (design reports) that the students had to offer - crafted into a singular editorial piece. With the overall theme being 'Narrative' and how brands tell stories.

PROCESS

The publication takes the dissertations from the students and weaves them into one. The design style takes a very Swiss approach, using Helvetica, breaking it apart and introducing lots of illustration and halftones. I decided in my pitch for the project that I was going to utilise the pre-existing DESIGNTAB 'Arrow' branding to tell a story. When you read or listen to a story, you're taken on a journey of ups, downs and I wanted to reflect that with the usage of the arrow by continuing it across pages.

The inner pages were printed onto Munken Pure Rough Cream 120gsm - Outer pages are printed onto Transclear 90gsm. The translucent shell is to reflect that a story or a book looks a certain way on the surface - but only when you read it you will get the context and the meaning behind it (and also an experiment with paper bindings).

OUTCOME

Overall I think the outcome went well for someone with little to none print experience, although I really enjoyed the print process. Looking back I would’ve changed so much with the layouts, it can be a bit overwhelming and clustered at times. Great learning experience for me on the other hand with the print process and also learning more about editorial layouts
