ABOUT

This Way Up was the Birmingham City University BA Graphic Communication 2025 Gradshow, themed around packing up and leaving university. I was privileged enough to lead the motion on this project with the main goal of showcasing the work from all of my peers.

PROCESS

The main thing I was trying to communicate was the work, so it was taking all of the motion and static work and sorting through it all to find out what works best, what order is it going to be put in, then it was the question how are we going to show it? And how are we going to incorporate the branding into the motion?

The motion was to be displayed on two big TV’s, projected in one room and then displayed across 7 different screens in an exhibition-esque style, so it was breaking all the work down, what is going to be shown on each and how do we do it.

Thankfully, I collaborated with a handful of L4 and L5 students that were motion-savvy, who produced a showreel each of all the work which was an absolute pleasure. From there the projector and the two TV’s were pretty much sorted, all I had to do was add UI elements to show who’s work was on the screen at that time, and also the 7 screens. This aspect I loved (and hated), programming each screen to work in sync with each other because if they all displayed the same thing it would be dull, so its was all about having them display different things but then they would sometimes come together to interact with each other.

OUTCOME

Despite the really short notice and little time I had to spare to get this over the line, it was still delivered and overall a success, the displays looked great and credit to all of the work being shown because without bit the motion would be meaningless.
